Contemporary to Modern: A World That Thrives on Visuals.

From your morning cereal box to a music festival poster to the process of picking your dream dress from the online wardrobe, nearly everything has been shaped in one way or another by one fascinating field – graphic designing. As a matter of fact, anyone can name their favorite artist or an author but very few can name a graphic designer. The life of a designer is a life of fight. Fight against the ugliness. People like me detect visual disease and try to cure it somehow with creative designs. Remember the time we all used to sloppily scribble our imaginations in drawing books? How fun was it to create art on your own. As easy as it may seem; but combining symbols, images and text to form visual representations of ideas and messages is one hell of serious business. For a profession that’s reshaped the surface of the world many times over, graphic designing is very young. William Addison Dwiggins was the first person in 1922, who called himself a ‘Graphic designer’. Graphic design suffered a lot of changes after the 50s. During this period, gadgets started to be present in the life of citizens. But even before that, in 1436, the concept of graphic design took a huge leap forward when the “Printing Press” was invented, which allowed content to be mass-produced for the first time in history. I am not trying to spin the yarn but the origins of graphic designing can be traced back to 136 BC when Egyptians developed a method of communication by using picture symbols. As I said before, graphics designing suffered a huge transformation between the 50s – 90s. Before computers and any kind of technology that could develop this field, the designers used to do their job in a manual way. Copy-cut-paste. An absolute time-consuming activity. Nowadays, doing a design is way simpler than 50 years ago. Today, designers can move an image, change its colors, proportions, and even improve their resolution in just a few minutes. Graphic designing is an ever-transforming world.  Modern graphic design has become more intuitive and immersive than ever, as artists no longer guess at what their markets are looking for.  A few decades ago, no-one could have imagined where computers and the web would take human lives. Now, we can only look back in awe at the impact the digital revolution has had on the way we work, communicate, and socialize. Life used to be a lot more difficult back in the time when they did not have designing tools and software we have today. For those who have been there and done that, are sighing with relief now that the designing field has become a lot more hi-tech, accessible and convenient. But for those who have never been there, here is a list of tools that the designers used to work with earlier:

1.  knives: knives are more exact than scissors thus allowed the designers to conserve all the small details.

2. Typography:  If the designers wanted to input any writing or content, he had to take the assistance of typographers.

3.  Technical Pen: ‘Rapidograph’ is used to draw lines with accurate lengths. This was used widely in drawing the outline for the images.

4. Rubber Cement: It worked like a clip works to hold clothes. rubber cement was helpful to adhere compositions to matte board. From a one-off contractor to an essential part of any business team, the role of a graphic designer has changed vastly. Today’s brands rely on their designers not just to create logos and tactical communication pieces, but also to establish a presence for them in the online and offline world as well as to continually build their brand’s reputation in the market. No matter how far we have come, we can’t forget the beginning of graphic design, to understand where we are today. Graphic Designing field is definitely changing the world around us, one visual at a time...
